Who owns your domain name?

Let's cover the basics first. The legal owner of a domain name is the person or organization listed as the registrant or owner of the contact with the domain. Domains usually have four contacts: registrant / owner, administrator, technical and billing. It can be the same person or different people.

For most types of domain names, you can check the contacts listed by WHOIS search (keep in mind that for some ccTLDs, this registry will not display this information and will not be displayed if you have a WHOIS privacy service in place, if applicable, so you should had to log in to their account iwantmyname) This means that if you are a contact for a domain registrant, you are the legal owner of the domain. These people are not:

The person or persons whose names are administrative, technical, or billing contacts for.
A person who was previously listed as a registrant / owner (but has since been changed to your name).

The registrar with whom you register a domain name if he does not provide his own contact details with the registrant, which is a bad business practice and is not allowed in many domain extensions, but still happens ...

The web hosting provider that you use to host your website.

The person who paid for the domain.

The person you hired to create and / or manage your site for you.

A person who owns or has access to the account on which the domain resides.

The company or organization you work for, unless listed in the registrant's contact information (although this may be difficult).

Company or organization with the same name as the domain, if not registered. (However, if they have a trademark or other rights to the name, they may come to you and possibly take it.)

Your business partner or other person who runs a company, club or other organization with you, unless their name is listed as the registrant's contact.

What is WHOIS?

When you register a domain name, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires your domain name registrar to submit your personal contact information to the WHOIS database. Once your listing appears in this online WHOIS directory, it is publicly available to anyone who chooses to check domain names using the WHOIS search tool.

There are a number of third parties that can check domain names in the WHOIS control database, including:

Individuals check domain names for expiration dates

When transferring ownership, registrars check domain names

In criminal investigations, authorities check domain names
